Boris Wittek

Boris Wittek completed his master degree in bioengineering (science and technology of the environment) in 2015, at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). During his master thesis, he measured the dimethylated sulfur compounds and methane concentrations in some of the sea ice cores collected during the YROSIAE project. After that, in October 2015, he started a PhD (FRIA grant) under the supervision of Pr. Jean-Louis Tison (Laboratoire de Glaciologie – ULB) and Pr. Nathalie Gypens (Laboratoire d’Ecologie des Systèmes Aquatiques – ULB). His PhD aims at improving the knowledge on the sea ice sulfur cycle by quantifying the intracellular response of sea ice microalgae to the seasonal environmental stress in the brine habitat, in terms of dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) and dimethylsulfoxyde (DMSO) production. To reach this objective, he performs controlled experiments with cell cultures of two characteristic polar microalgae: Fragilariopsis cylindrus and Phaeocystis Antarctica.
